Restoring the smooth sliding of my Magic Mouse with Teflon (PTFE) adhesive tape

Magic Mouse with PTFE tape applied to the bottom rails

I was originally buying this PTFE tape from Amazon, but the original seller, CS Hyde, was no longer selling it there. It was instead replaced by another seller, and I didn’t want to go through the hassle of dealing with returns from a third-party seller in case they were not selling the equivalent.

I tried looking directly on CS Hyde’s site and emailed them to ask which item on their site was the same. They never responded to my email. I added what I thought was the tape to the cart. Shipping was $20. No thanks. Instead I headed over to the trusty McMaster-Carr, dug around and bought a few options that looked like a good match to the original PTFE that I was using as mouse tape. Item 76475A32 is a perfect alternative with $5 shipping.

It is 0.004 inches thick, and a 1/2 inch wide. The adhesive is silicone so it peels right off and doesn’t leave any stickiness behind.

At a half inch wide, it fits perfectly over the rails of my Magic Mouse. The thickness of the tape makes it easy to conform to the curves and edges of the mouse. It restored the bottom of the mouse to the same slickness as when new and once again glides well across my desk.
